It is defined as “a cloud model that provides all the infrastructure required to create and manage custom cloud apps.” In other words, a platform-as-a-service company encourages other developers to build their own apps on top of the original platform – think of all the startups that customize Salesforce and build new products within the Salesforce ecosystem. Platform-as-a-service is a term coined by Marc Benioff to describe Salesforce. That said, it’s probably more correct to think of ICONIQ’s deal as making a “platform-as-a-service” play, rather than the simple acquisition of an individual software product. The financial terms of the deal have not been disclosed, but given ICONIQ’s investors and philosophy it is expected that was valued on a revenue multiple of 8x to 9x, typical practice for software-as-a-service companies in a growth phase rather than an EBITDA multiple. ’s annual revenue is in the $110-120 million range. Again, I return to my second conception of utopia - of a possible, materially grounded, progressive alternative. ![]() That the only way to check Russia’s expansionism is by supporting Western supremacy. Rather, I am trying to warn against our instinct to believe the inevitability of the binary. ![]() I am also not suggesting that liberal ideas such as freedom and democracy ought to be simply rejected because they are “Western” (quite the opposite). ![]() My attempt here is not to engage in facile polemic against liberalism (or liberals), or underplay the senselessness of the Russian invasion. Thus, the “peace” of the last 80 years that Sunak celebrated in his speech sounded curiously like the silence of the morgue in large parts of Asia, Africa, and Latin America. And lest we forget, the last time the US and the UK were unapologetic about their superior values, Iraqis ended up being on the receiving end of liberal benevolence. Liberalism’s economic miracle, the free market, gave rise to the oligarchy in Russia that sponsored its unfreedom under Putin. Ironically, nothing is more emblematic of this than the Russian case. Thus, the restriction of liberalism’s success to the West (and failure elsewhere) is not an anomaly- it is what keeps it together. The unlimited freedom and enterprise of the West have to be necessarily bankrolled by its massive control of resources - economic, environmental and political. What is not apparent to us however is that for the West to be so abundant, clean, and good, the rest of the world has to be necessarily deprived, dirty, and rotten. We marvel at how the cops don’t take bribes, how our “merit” is recognised, and so on. For instance, many Indians (including myself) are often impressed when we go to the West (“Things are so good, safe, and clean here, unlike back home”). And this is certainly true in a limited sense. Here, I would term liberalism a “utopian” project in the first sense - one that believes that the ideals of individual freedom, equality (legal), and free enterprise automatically result in a better system. The liberal prognosis that the West must unapologetically embrace liberalism is a position that ignores historical and structural realities. Here, I partly agree - contrary to what some overzealous critics of Pax Americana think, Russian aggression is not a challenge to imperialism. The rise of these countries has provided other countries with another model - one that is fundamentally illiberal and undemocratic. The thrust of the argument is that the West’s defensiveness and apologetic behaviour have emboldened the rise of far less desirable alternatives such as authoritarian Russia and China. The initial instinct after 1991 was correct after all - history has ended, and the West was on the right side.Īlmost reminiscent of Woodrow Wilson’s call for a liberal world order post-1919, some have urged the West to embrace this confidence openly. Bubbling under this surface is also a renewed moral confidence of the West regarding its liberal values. ![]() Leaders, newspapers, and television are rife with cries of a decisive fight against Putin’s tyranny and authoritarianism. The Ukraine war has certainly re-energised NATO, which had seemed shaky due to the vacillations of the Trump era. It is in this second sense that I will characterise this article as a utopian enterprise - something that suggests a possible alternative rooted in reality. Thus, what seemed utopian or fantastic in Europe was pretty much the regular state of affairs in large parts of the New World. However, what is often forgotten in these narratives is that these utopian imaginations were very much inspired by the existing material reality of Native American life. Subsequent European thinkers also imagined a state of nature when humans were perfectly free and equal before the exigencies of civilisation prevailed. The term “Utopia” itself was popularised by Thomas More’s book of the same title (1516), in which he imagined a place where human beings existed in perfect bliss, with a welfare state and no private property (except slaves). An academic or utopian argument is essentially an impractical one, far detached from material reality. In the world of sober analysis, words such as “utopian” and “academic” are more of backhanded insults. |
